Dog who was "Cat of the Year" to be eulogized at Westchester Cat Show
Ginny was one terrific dog--a true canine's canine with a heart bigger than all of Long Island, where she was her own one-dog rescue crew. And now Ginny, who passed away in August, will get the sendoff she deserves--at a cat show of all places.
You see, Ginny was a dog who so loved cats that she rescued hundreds of them. Her heroics became the basis for two books--The Dog Who Rescues Cats : The True Story of Ginny and The Blessing of the Animals : True Stories of Ginny, the Dog Who Rescues Cats, both written by Ginny's human companion, Philip Gonzalez. And in honor of Ginny's extraordinary service on behalf of cats, she was named "Cat of the Year" by the Westchester Feline Club in 1998.
Several of Ginny's exploits are recounted in a terrific article on TheLedger.com, including the time she threw herself against a pipe at a construction site to topple it and reveal the kittens trapped inside.
And so it is entirely fitting that Ginny receive a touching eulogy from the cats who will attend this year's Westchester Cat Show. On November 19th, with 300 cats on the floor, the club will ask for silence as Gonzalez and members of Ginny's fan club share a few thoughts.
If only we humans could learn a few things from Ginny rather than getting along like, well, cats and dogs.
