Paul Sorvino and daughter combat puppy mills
Paul Sorvino, star of Law and Order (the early years) and movies such as Goodfellas, Romeo + Juliet, and Mr. 3000, is working for a better world for pets through his organization, Dogfellas.
Paul and his daughter, Amanda, launched the organization to take dogs from puppy mills, dog pounds and research labs, foster them in the Sorvino home and adopt them out to "very exclusive homes." Their ultimate mission is to banish puppy and kitten mills.
Amanda doesn't pull any punches with her hatred for puppy mills: "Puppy millers all have one thing in common: They're all obsessive-compulsive animal hoarders. They get high off of imprisoning animals in bulk for long periods of time. Economizing on food, bedding and shelter also gets them high. And they actually like the smell of the filth, urine and disease."
Not sure if that's true, but we support the Dogfellas cause--people should adopt more pets from local shelters (or reputable breeders) and avoid purchasing animals at pet stores. Too many pets are in need, waiting for a good human companion (and every pet saved from a shelter is a pet saved in every way.)
Amanda says the requirements to adopt an animal from Dogfellas are stringent. The prospective owner must have excellent vet references and a large fenced-in yard. They have to offer an indoor dog lifestyle and agree not to crate the dog for more than two hours a day.

Has anyone without a yard ever tried to adopt a dog? Its impossible! I live in a very dog friendly apartment building, and Im surrounded by parks. Sure, its more work to own a dog when you dont have a yard.. but what separates an apartment dweller from someone with a large back yard is that we have to go out with our dogs when they go out and we end up PLAYING with them.. several times a day! what a horrible life for a dog that would otherwise DIE in a pound... right? stupid rule. stupid stupid rule.
