I cannot tell a lie: George Clooney chopped down a cherry... er, Christmas Tree

ContactMusic.com reports that George Clooney once ruined a neighbor's Christmas by chopping down his only tree.

Now, that might not sound very kind, but George claims it was revenge for the neighbor taking shots at his dog (and that kind of neighbor deserves everything he or she has coming, in our book)!

Says George, "He had this perfect yard, tiny little house, little white picket fence and one evergreen tree in the middle of it... On Christmas Eve I snuck into his yard with a bow saw and I cut down his only tree."

Someone may want to help George understand the true meaning of Christmas. While we may side with George because threatening pets is completely evil (and because George has such a cute smile), I'm not sure we can agree with this statement: "It is the true, absolute spirit of Christmas and giving!"

Caddyshack actress seeks lost cat

We hope this story will have a happy ending, and so does WTKR, which posted the news to their site.

For weeks a Classified ad appeared in the Daily Press reading, "Missing a loved one is especially hard at Christmas... My only wish is to get my little guy back, or to find the wonderful people who've been taking care of him."

Reporter Stacy Davis went in search of the heartbroken and dedicated cat own and found it was a celebrity, Cindy Morgan, who famously played Lacie Underall in the movie Caddyshack.

Turns out three of Cindy's cats escaped last January when a door was left open, but only two returned. Since then, Cindy has never ceased to seek her missing feline, Peanut.

It's been almost a year, and kind-hearted Cindy isn't so much looking to have Peanut returned as she is interested in hearing he made his way to a warm and loving home. "Send me a photo just to let me know what a good time he's having on your couch watching 'It's a Wonderful Life' or something," she said. "If I know he's okay, I'll have a really Merry Christmas."

The WTKR site asks anyone living in the Hamptons who recognizes Peanut to call 757-256-6172.

Jake Gyllenhaal communes with animals while filming Brokeback Mountain

Have you seen Brokeback Mountain, yet? Well do it. Now! Don't do it because we told you--do it because just about every movie critic in America loves it.

Turns out Brokeback Mountain star Jake Gyllenhaal was communing with more than just Heath Ledger while on the set. He says one of the most rewarding things about making the movie was the chance "to get close to animals - horses and dogs and sheep."

The experience led him to adopt a German shepherd mix, which he has named Atticus. "My dog has changed my life," he says.

Read more about Jake and Atticus on AZCentral.com (the third article down).

The President and his Dogs

Nothing newsworthy about this, but we wanted to share a nice picture of the most powerful pooches in the world. President Bush is shown carrying his dog, Barney, while first lady Laura Bush carries her dog, Miss Beazley, as they depart from Waco, Texas on Marine One the day after Christmas.

You can view a larger version of this photo along with other pictures of the president attending to business on the Yahoo news site.

Guide Dog Who Changed the Senate Floor Passes

Every now and then we post articles not about celebrities and their animals but about celebrity animals. This is one of those articles. Beau was not a famous canine actor, but he did become well known back in 1997 when he changed the rules of the U.S. Senate.

You see, Beau wasn't just a pet--he was a guide dog. His human companion, Moira Shea, worked for Sen. Ron Wyden's office but was not permitted on the floor of the Senate because the rules pertaining to animals on the Senate floor were fuzzy (no pun intended). Wyden quickly introduced a resolution to allow disabled people to bring "supporting services," including dogs, onto the floor, and Moira was then able to attend to her business in the capital with the assistance of Beau.

Beau passed away this month having lived a long and distinguished life of service. In addition to changing the stodgy and unfair rules in the Senate, he served Moira well and loyally until 2002 when Beau retired, replaced at Moira's side -- but not in her heart -- by Owen, also a yellow Lab.

Beau then began going to work every day with Shea's husband, Christophe G. Lorrain, a teacher. "He would go out of the house in the morning and try to guide my husband," whose vision is fine, Shea said. "Beau still needed to feel like he was working. He still needed a job. That's what he was born to do."

We just wanted to take a moment to honor a good, hard-working dog who was a celebrity in the very best sense of the word!

You can read more about Beau on the Washington Post Web site.

Pets in California News

No celebs in either of these stories, but seeing both Mercury News articles in one day made me want to share them.

The first article is about Jet Pets, a "creature care facility at Los Angeles International Airport (that) animals overcome pet lag." (Wish someone would help me with that!) What sorts of creatures, you might ask? "I've shipped ostriches, everything. Ostriches are not fun. Kangaroos. We used to do a lot of lions," Jet Pets' David Hasenauer said. "We used to ship dolphins, have to hose them down. Sea lions." Oh yeah, and the occasional dog and cat, too!

The second California pet article is about a new, proposed state law that would require cities to take into account the "needs of individuals with household pets, service animals and livestock" in their disaster planning. Let's hear it for Assemblyman Leland Yee of San Francisco for this smart piece of legislation.

We know some people gripe that humans have to come first when it comes to reacting to disasters (and they're right) but the lessons of Hurricane Katrina shouldn't be forgotten: People are much more likely to heed evacuations and leave if they can take their four-legged family members! (You wouldn't catch us leaving our pets behind, that's for sure!)

Happy Holidays to all pets and humans

We wish to take this opportunity to thank you for visiting our blog, and we wish you and your pets a very Merry Christmas. From our own pet cat Sassy and everyone who helps maintain this blog, we hope you and enjoy a safe holidays and a peaceful and prosperous 2006!

Renee Zwllweger seeks to replace Kenny with dog

This hasn't exactly been Renee's year. She met, got engaged, got married, separated, and annulled from Kenny Chesney, all in the course of 2005. One can't blame her for seeking a little loyal companionship from man's best friend.

According to ContactMusic.com, Renee wants a puppy under her Christmas tree. She is planning a "simple family Christmas" at home in Texas and she's hoping for a new pet.

"What I'd really love is to have a dog - a tiny teacup, maybe a Yorkie."

Then again, she admits to being a bit of an absentee pet owner to her cat. "She's well cared for and loved, but the fact is I'm always gone."

Click here to read more about Renee's desire for a pet. Or, if you haven't read enough about it already, visit People Magazine for more about Kenny and Renee's tumultuous year.

From the streets to costarring with Cameron Diaz

He once lived on the streets and now is a highly-paid Hollywood actor. Such is the experience of Hamlet, a mixed-breed, mostly pug pooch.

Hamlet was living on the streets of Morris County, New Jersey three years ago when he was saved and placed at a homeless pet shelter. It was there his talents were recognized by Steve McAuliff of Animal Actors. McAuliff's company specializes in training animals for show-business appearances.

"He was an energetic, busy little dog, and very inquisitive -- habits that might not be real desirable in house pets, but certainly a great fit for Animal Actors," said an administrator at the shelter.

Hamlet recently made his movie debut in the critically acclaimed "In Her Shoes," where he also became the envy of males of other species by getting a bath from star Cameron Diaz.

Carmen Electra spreads Xmas chear with dog

I have no idea where this picture is from. It, along with other pix of Carmen Electra and a cute pooch, appears on SocialiteLife.com. Unfortunately, the site provides no info about why the shots were taken.

Then again, it's Carmen and the pictures feature her looking especially lovely and clothed more than usual, so who cares were the images come from? Just, click here to see more shots of holiday-attired Carmen and her pooch.

Elton John and David Furnish tie not with pet pooch present

Congratulations to Elton John and David Furnish on the occasion of their wedding. The long-time couple were married today in England, shortly after the country began permitting same-sex marriages.

In attendance for the big event was--of course--Elton's and David's dog, Arthur. Reuters captured the arrival of the pooch with well-dressed friends of the happy couple, British artist Sam Taylor-Wood and her husband, art dealer Jay Jopling (photo at right).

"Both Elton and David had tears in their eyes as the service drew to a close," Taylor-Wood told People. "It was lovely when they kissed. Very romantic and touching."

Carmen Electra's pet scorpion passes away

We tend to focus on cats and dogs on this blog because, well, most pets are cats and dogs. But some celebs prefer more unusual pets, and Carmen Electra is just such a celeb. She had a pet scorpion. (Nothing against scorpions, but we personally prefer our pets without exoskeletons.)

Unfortunately, Carmen is mourning the death of her pet scorpion. She found the not-so-cuddly pet just this past summer as it was crawling around her Hollywood home. (That's what we call a pest problem.) She decided to keep it, much to the dismay of her husband Dave Navarro (of Jane's Addiction, Red Hot Chili Peppers, and reality TV fame).

Carmen says, "I took very good care of my scorpion, because I felt bad (for him). I didn't want to kill him and I didn't want to just let him back out, so I fed him grasshoppers and I went to a pet store to find out what to do."

Read more about Carmen and her scorpion on ContactMusic.com.

Is Michael Jackson starving his animals?

We debated whether to post this: First of all, we are not sure it is true, since it comes from just one source (a FOX news report that is repeated across many other news sites). Secondly, the news is a downer and we prefer our celeb pet news to be upbeat, funny, or odd. So, we'll share the sad news, hope it is untrue, and will continue to watch for other reports.

femalefirst.co.uk reports that Michael Jackson has abandoned his Neverland Ranch animals with little electricity and water. The site claims Michael is so broke his animals are on the brink of starvation.

Michael has escaped the US, the press, and the painful rumors that seem to collect around him. He now lives in Bahrain, but his animals are reportedly suffering back at his California ranch.

Fox News columnist Roger Friedman is quoted saying, "There are real fears now for the animals in Jackson's home zoo. Last week, the ranch was down to almost no food for the animals. At the last minute, sources say, a delivery was made, but it won't last long."

We hope this isn't true. And if it is true, we hope authorities will step in quickly. After all, this is in the same state that prevented Paris Hilton from keeping an exotic monkey because it was against the law. If California authorities can act quickly against one heiress and her pampered pet, let's hope they can act even more quickly when many animals are in true need!

Here is the report on FemaleFirst. And here is the report from FOX news detailing Jacko's terrible financial state of affairs.

Paige Davis glad to "trade" for time with husband and dog

You Trading Places fans know that Paige Davis was the face of the hit show and that she left the TLC program earlier this year when it moved to a “host-less” format.

So, what's Paige up to? In addition to talking to Dr. Phil about making some contributions to his show, playing Roxie in the musical “Chicago," and donating time to Operation Backpack (which raises awareness and school supplies for more than 11,000 children), she's also happy to be spending time with husband and puppy.

Paige told the Times Leader, "It’s been a very, very, very special time for the two of us and our little dog.” Paige earlier indicated her love for her pooch by saying if she was stranded on an island, the things she'd take with her would be, "My husband, Patrick, and my dog, Sophie." (Note to our loved ones: While we appreciate the sentiment, if you're going to be stranded on a desert island, please do not include us--instead, take a satellite phone and a month's worth of canned goods.)

New Lassie not a descendant of original Lassie

We're just glad to see Lassie return to the big screen after such a long absence, but some die-hard Lassie fans aren't so sure about the new movie version of Lassie. The original movie (starring Elizabeth Taylor) was made 62 years ago with an American dog named Pal. Since then, every Lassie movie has featured a direct descendant of the original Lassie, who was owned and trained by Rudd Weatherwax. Eight generations of his offspring have played Lassie in two TV series and around 10 movies.

But the makers of this year's Lassie, which was made in the UK, decided to use collies supplied by a UK firm. They claim this was due to the UK's strict anti-rabies laws: "A Lassie descendant was our first choice. There are only a few bloodline Lassies that are trained sufficiently to star in a major motion picture and, unfortunately, none of these dogs had the necessary paperwork - a pet passport - to travel and work internationally."

Some Lassie fans are up in arms. For example, one fan posted to an Internet chat room, "I don't think I will see the movie if a relative of the original Lassie isn't going to be in it. I think this is a horrible mistake."

Click here to visit Mirror.co.uk to read more about the Lassie controversy and to learn what happened when Animal Planet tried to use a non-descendant for their 1997 series.

Paris gets two new pooches

No, we are not changing this blog into an All-Paris blog... but it may seem that way sometimes. It's not like we go out of our way looking for Paris news, but when it comes to celebs and pets, no one makes headlines like Ms. Hilton.

Daily Blabber reports that Hilton has picked up two new pooches to add to her collection of pets, and they have the photos to prove it. Read more on IVillage.com.

Now PETA takes on Paris Hilton

What, is this official "dump on Paris Hilton" week? First she was voted worst dog owner in an online poll conducted by New York Dog and Hollywood Dog magazines, and now PETA has dubbed her the worst-dressed celebrity for her fur-wearing ways. (And a couple weeks ago, officials took her monkey away because it was illegal to keep the animal in L.A.)

PETA put Paris at the top of their "worst-dressed" list followed by her friend Kimberly Stewart, Lisa Gastineau, Victoria Gotti and Tara Reid. Last year's "winner," Martha Stewart, has changed her way. Says the domestic diva/ex-con, "I used to wear real fur, but, like many others, I had a change of heart when I learned what actually happens to the animals."

Let's hope Paris changes her way and decides she doesn't need fur in her extensive wardrobe. (Funny thing is--she lives in warm L.A. and is usually wearing few clothes when photographed, so how frequently could she possibly be spotted wearing fur?)

Paul Sorvino and daughter combat puppy mills

Paul Sorvino, star of Law and Order (the early years) and movies such as Goodfellas, Romeo + Juliet, and Mr. 3000, is working for a better world for pets through his organization, Dogfellas.

Paul and his daughter, Amanda, launched the organization to take dogs from puppy mills, dog pounds and research labs, foster them in the Sorvino home and adopt them out to "very exclusive homes." Their ultimate mission is to banish puppy and kitten mills.

Amanda doesn't pull any punches with her hatred for puppy mills: "Puppy millers all have one thing in common: They're all obsessive-compulsive animal hoarders. They get high off of imprisoning animals in bulk for long periods of time. Economizing on food, bedding and shelter also gets them high. And they actually like the smell of the filth, urine and disease."

Not sure if that's true, but we support the Dogfellas cause--people should adopt more pets from local shelters (or reputable breeders) and avoid purchasing animals at pet stores. Too many pets are in need, waiting for a good human companion (and every pet saved from a shelter is a pet saved in every way.)

Amanda says the requirements to adopt an animal from Dogfellas are stringent. The prospective owner must have excellent vet references and a large fenced-in yard. They have to offer an indoor dog lifestyle and agree not to crate the dog for more than two hours a day.

Read more about Paul, Amanda, and Dogfellas on their site or at LongIslandPress.com.

Jennifer Aniston sleeps in her dog's bed

I wonder what Vince thinks about this?

Jennifer Aniston has revealed she likes to snuggle up with her dog in his basket when she feels lonely. Her dog, Norman, refuses to sleep anywhere other than his own "comfortable little bed," so when she wants some quality time with her pooch he makes room she she can "curl up and sleep for an extra 20 minutes".

"I know that sounds insane. It's shocking that I can fit in his bed but, hey, we all get lonely."

To read more about Jennifer, Norman, and her feelings about her recent sexy GQ cover shoot, visit ThisIsLondom.Co.Uk.

Adrien Brody loves animals big and small

He may star in movies with large beasts, but Oscar® winning actor Adrien Brody loves small ones as well. As he travels to promote the movie King Kong (a movie that wouldn't seem to need much promoting), he's also taking the time to speak about an issue close to his heart: animal charities.

In the latest edition of Paw Luxuries, Adrien says, "“I think the world needs more organizations of the caliber and people like Terry Crisp and Noah’s Wish. To look out for animals that are unable to look after themselves in this time of need is an incredible and amazing act.”

While everyone will be speaking of Adrien’s love of a big ape this holiday season, Brody shares with Paw Luxuries his love of Ceelo and Lolly, his two Chihuahuas. “They have reminded me about what’s most important to me,” he says. “They give me a sense of centeredness I crave. Especially after wining the Academy Award®, a lot has changed, and the world’s perception of me has really changed. No matter what, your pets will never judge you. It’s nice to have a simple honest relationship with my pal consistently.”

Star of new Lassie movie formerly afraid of dogs

Ten-year-old actress Hester Odgers was thrilled to land a role in the new Lassie movie--until she realized there'd be dogs on the set. Turns out Hester was afraid of dogs.

Hester, who was chosen for the same role filled by Elizabeth Taylor in the original movie, overcame her fears quickly. After all, who can be afraid of Lassie?

"When I arrived to do the film the first thing I saw was this big collie. I was backing away but mum walked me towards the dog. She told me to stroke him and walk with him - I did it at arm's length.

"By the end of the day I could kneel down with him and after a few days I let him lick my hand."
Hester isn't focused on becoming a big movie star like Taylor--she'd prefer to grow up and become a zoo keeper. (Good for her--the world needs a few less actresses and a few more zoo keepers!)

Mariah Carey's dog flies first class

If you follow celebrity pet news, you know that Mariah Carey loves her dog, Jack. The Jack Russell terrier is the love of her life (although with rumors swirling of an engagement for Mimi, it may be that Jack needs to share her attention).

It comes as no surprise that Jack flies first class. Says Mariah, "My dog flies private! He's too big to travel economy. He's not a little tiny dog he's a Jack Russell - he's a very masculine dog."

"I'm not going to put him back with someone I don't know who might feed him or something - he's my dog."

Okay, let's be honest--if we had the money, we'd all fly our pets first class.

Christy Carlson Romano and Club Libby Lu sell plushes to benefit animals

Girl's store Club Libby Lu and singer/actress Christy Carlson Romano are selling dogs--plush dogs, that is--and it's all for a good cause: A portion of the proceeds from this product will benefit the American Society for Shelter Animals (ASSA).

The plush pooches aren't just any dog, but Christy's own celebrity dog, Chewy the "Rock Star". Chewy is a French bull dog that has been a companion to Christy for the past two years. "Everywhere we go, people just fall in love with her! She is very comfortable in her own skin and is a true "princess" at heart!" Christy says.

Christy has been a non-stop entertainer since the age of six. She has starred on Broadway as the 10th anniversary Belle in Disney's Beauty and the Beast. The 21-year-old is best known for her roles on two Emmy-nominated Disney Channel series: Ren Stevens in "Even Stevens" and the voice of Kim Possible in Disney's animated "Kim Possible."

We're all for a good celebrity charity effort, but this one may be a bit too self serving: The 10" high plush dog is wearing a T-shirt that reads, "I Love Christy Carlson Romano." What happened to the good old days when celebs would donate money to a good cause (often anonymously) or would lend their name or voice to a charity? We're glad Christy is willing to support animals, but we're just not sure which cause is getting the bigger lift--Christy's career or the ASSA.

Okay, so maybe we're just jealous Club Libby Lu isn't selling plush dogs with our names all over them. We hope lots of Chewys get sold, bring many dollars to the ASSA and the animals they support.

Club Libby Lu will offer Chewy at its 80 store locations nationwide or by calling 1-866-LIBBYLU.

The American Society for Shelter Animals (ASSA) is an Outreach Program offered through the Fox Memorial Clinic which forwards monies to shelters in need to help pay for spay & neuters and other services. Fox Memorial Clinic is a wholly-owned subsidiary of the Connecticut Humane Society. Both organizations are private and not-for-profit and receive no state or federal funding. For more information visit http://www.foxclinic.org/.

Oprah picks up own dog poop

Oprah always struck me as a pretty grounded woman--at least as grounded as anyone can be who is one of the most powerful women in Hollywood (and, arguably, the world), has a staff of 450, is seen daily around the globe, has a private jet, and owns a $70-million estate in Montecito, CA (not to mention two huge properties in Maui.)

The L.A. Times recently interviewed Oprah and the discussion briefly turned to her new dogs. It's good to see Oprah isn't above a little poop scooping!

Sophie and Solomon, her two spaniels, were recently joined by three new golden retriever puppies Oprah adopted. The new puppies, says the L.A. Times, "have been providing a definite balance to the general fabulousness of her life." (Which is just a fancy way to say that handling dog poop keeps us all a little more humble.)

According to Oprah, "If you knew how much dog [poop] I picked up last weekend, you would not believe it. But I will never ask another person to do it because I never want to hear someone say, 'And then she asked me to pick up her dog [poop].' "

Paris asks for Xmas gift of tiger

It is not uncommon for pets to be requested or given as gifts at the holidays. But even for Paris Hilton this request goes a bit far, don't you think?

The Sunday Mail reports that Paris has asked her boyfriend, Greek shipping heir Stavros Niarchos, for a Christmas gift of a baby tiger. Paris supposedly told a friend how cute baby tigers are, adding "They're like 100lbs."

I hope she's checked with the city and state for their laws on tigers as pets! Paris recently ran into difficulties when she adopted a monkey contrary to local laws; authorities confiscated the pet, as a result.

And while we're sure Paris is a good (or at least good-intentioned) pet owner (no matter what the readers of Hollywood Dog and New York Dog think), perhaps tigers are best left in zoos where they can be managed and raised by professionals.

(P.S. We would be remiss if we didn't mention that we agree with the Humane Society of the United States: Unless the giftee and gifter have carefully considered and discussed a pet prior to the holidays, it is much better to wait until after the holidays to adopt rather than surprising someone with a pet as a gift.)

Psychic offers insights into Madonna's dog, Chiquita

Good lord, it must've been a slow news day in Chicago! The Chicago Sun-Times actually interviewed a psychic to inquire into the state of mind of Chiquita, Madonna's chihuahua.

You think I'm joking, don't you? Well, here's the link in case you wish to verify for yourself.

The Sun-Times asks, "How does the chi-chi chihuahua feel about her place in the family?" And for the answer, they turn to Nancy Wallace, a psychic who hosts a Chicago-area radio show.

And what were some of her important insights? "Chiquita is very shy but can be very feisty." (Gee, I've never met a chihuahua like that.) And Madonna's pet, "really wants to be held and loved by Madonna." (Umm, unlike most other pets who want emotional distance from their human companions?) If these are deep psychic insights, then perhaps I should become a pet psychic.

We'll give Wallace credit for going out on a limb for one bold bit of prognosticating: "Chiquita's left hind leg could either be hurting now, or it is going to get hurt during the holidays," said Wallace. We hope she's wrong, but we'll be watching the news for updates on Chiquita.

For more surprising and important revelations about Chiquita and Madonna, check out SunTimes.com.

Paris and Tinkerbell in Holiday display offend some

You have to admit, it's not exactly the typical holiday display. No inflatable snowmen, nativity scenes, or animatronic Santas are to be found on the lawn of Joe Moretti in Cranston, RI.

Instead, he's posted blown-up images of Paris and Tinkerbell adorned with pink lights. Reaction has been mixed, and some say it is inappropriate.

We can't imagine why! An all-Tinkerbell display would be quite welcome, we think; but Paris in tiny outfits doesn't exactly scream "Happy Holidays," does it?

The display includes a list entitled "How to Be a Hilton," complete with tips such as: "An entrance is everything," "NEVER wake before 10 a.m." and "NEVER spend the summer in NYC."

To read more about how the Paris and Tinkerbell display is being greeted by neighbors, visit CNN.com. Or, for an interesting twist to this story, check out ContactMusic.com: They report that Moretti isn't just an unknown fellow like you or I; he's the guy who was arrested for trespassing on Martha Stewart's property last year. Maybe Paris should be upgrading her security system--we wouldn't want to see any unfortunate stalking incidents for her or Tinkerbell!

Joss Stone the best and Paris Hilton the worst?

While we don't know either Joss Stone or Paris Hilton personally, we're sure they both love their pets equally as much. The readers of New York Dog Magazine and The Hollywood Dog Magazine apparently do not agree--singer Joss was chosen 2005 World's Best Dog Owner while Paris was named the worst, according to the results of a 3-month-long online poll.

Stone narrowly edged out Ashley Olsen, who adopted a mixed-breed from the Animal Haven Shelter (animalhavenshelter.org), in New York this year. Tori Spelling, a Pug owner, who despite her marriage break-up, "tirelessly campaigned" for the Much Love Animal Rescue (muchlove.org) in Los Angeles was placed third.

As for Paris? "Our readers felt Ms. Hilton's dog-parenting skills left a lot to be desired," said Leslie Padgett, editor of The New York and Hollywood Dog Magazines. "First she loses Tinkerbell, then she ditches her for a cuter dog, then replaces that dog with a ferret, then a Kinkajou monkey."

Poor Paris--it might sound odd to say this considering she seems to be lurking in every magazine these days, but it seems she could use some better PR management. After all, it's not as if she left Tinkerbell in some dark cage somewhere (or, at least, we don't think she did).

Scarlett Johansson is showered with dog gifts by Ewan McGregor

It must be nice to have someone like Ewan McGregor "showering" you and your pet with gifts, don't you think? Then again, if you're Scarlett Johansson and you have to put up with Director Michael Bay, you probably deserve a little pampering.

In the New York Times, Scarlett (who is just 21 but seems to have been acting in mature roles for a decade) hints that her experience on the set of The Island was a bit challenging. When asked about director Bay's pet dogs, Scarlett says, "He needs them. He has a lot of enemies."

Last year, Scarlett bought herself a Chihuahua and was "showered" with gifts by her Island costar Ewan McGregor. He gave Scarlett "coats and collars and lots of dog toys."

Now you might think one of Hollywood's most lovely and talented up-and-coming actresses would be able to purchase her own dog items, but she is apparently quite accustomed to being on the receiving end of gifts. On the set of The Horse Whisperer, Robert Redford gave her a silver bracelet, "which I cherished," Scarlett says. And during the filming of Girl With a Pearl Earring, the author of the book upon which the movie was based gave her a hand-painted Dutch tile from the 16th century. "That was a really beautiful gift," she says. "Very thoughtful."

Jude Law and Sienna Miller come to aid of pound dogs

Porgy and Bess are described as "two scruffy mutts," but they're two scruffy mutts who live in the lap of luxury, now. The two dogs were saved from an Irish dog pound by Debbie Spear, who has been making regular trips to Ireland to save dogs ever since learning Irish authorities make no attempt to find unwanted dogs new homes and destroy dogs after just one week in the pound.

On-again, off-again, on-again celeb couple Jude Law and Sienna Miller adopted two of the dogs after seeking out a rescue group. "They wanted to give a home to rescue dogs, had gone round the internet looking at various charity websites and found us, which was very nice," said Sandy Mallinson of Surrey Animal Charity, the organization who funds Spear's trips.

"They did not go on about who they were or what they did - they were very sweet and ordinary and concerned and interested in what we were doing. It's clear they are both genuine animal lovers and it was a pleasure to home Porgy and Bess with them."

Peter O'Toole plays second fiddle to Lassie

Peter O'Toole is a great actor. He's appeared in almost 80 movies. He's been Lawrence of Arabia. He's been Sherlock Holmes. He's been Casanova. And he's starred in one of my favorite seldom-seen movies, My Favorite Year.

And he also happens to be a very humble guy. In an interview with the Yorkshire Post Today about his role in the upcoming movie, Lassie, he says, "Lassie isn't about me, it's about the dog."

But, he's not above pointing out that the dog isn't quite the professional that Peter is. "Admittedly the dog isn't all that good an actor – with the right cuts and the odd lamb chop we got the job done," he says

Read more here. Or read about Lassie, which is being released to a limited number of theaters on December 16th.

Denise Richards visits pet store

Okay, so this isn't earth-shattering celeb pet news, but it does give us the chance to post a picture of Hollywood's Hottest Mom: Denise Richards. (That's not my judgment but In Touch Magazine's) (although I'm not disagreeing).

The almost-split-but-now-reconciled Ms. Sheen was seen with her son, Sam, visiting a pet store and checking out some birds. No reports on whether they left with a pet, but from the looks of it, Sam isn't so sure she wants a bird.

Emily returns to the US from France

There is no typical "celeb" in this story, but Emily has become an international celebrity in her own right after hitching a ride (and surviving) on a plane from Wisconsin to France. If you don't believe she's a real celeb, here are links to news articles on WashingtonPost.com, BBC.com, Mainichi Newspapers (Japan), The Advertiser (Australia), CNN, MSNBC, and Ireland Online.

Emily became world famous when she was found in France, having lived in a cargo container after stowing away in Appleton, Wisconsin. This past week, Emily returned home. She was greeted by her family and a horde of reporters after touching down in Milwaukee (which is coincidentally the headquarters for our blog sponsor, Just Pet Strollers). (Did you like the way we smoothly worked our sponsor into this article?)

Her sumptuous return in business class on a Continental Airlines flight was a sharp departure from her trip to France, where she was found thin and thirsty but still alive. Emily vanished from her Appleton home in late September. She apparently wandered into a nearby paper company's distribution center and crawled into a container of paper bales.

We're happy to share this amazing story and to welcome Emily home. Here's hoping she retires from the celebrity life and enjoys some quiet time at home.

Rex Murphy bites Tom Green’s leg

Do you remember Tom Green? He's been a little under the radar since he became the former Mr. Drew Barrymore and released the unspeakably bad movie Freddy Got Fingered. The poor guy--he also had to deal with testicular cancer (and because he is who he is, many people thought he was pulling a prank when his condition was first announced.)

Well, you can't keep Tom down--he's planning a return to the limelight. And he won't be alone: Rex Murphy will be along for the ride.

Those of you up in Canada might be thinking, "Rex Murphy? The CBC reporter?" No, not that Rex Murphy. This Rex Murphy has feathers and likes to bite Tom's leg and lovingly gnaw on Tom's lip with his beak.

Mr. Murphy is Green’s new parrot. On a lark, Tom bought the bird in a California pet store, then decided to name him after reporter, who has been particularly unkind to Tom.

Would Tom introduce Rex the bird to Rex the reporter? “I wouldn’t want Rex Murphy to get the avian bird flu … and I’m talking about my bird.”

So, about that career resurrection: Tom is releasing a solo rap CD and his second directorial attempt, Infamous, is due in 2006. Here's hoping Tom's next movie is better received so he can keep Rex in bird food!

Check out more about Tom's new CD and upcoming plans in the Edmonton Journal.

Zsa Zsa and her dog

In a new article on scotsman.com about "the diva dog phenomenon," you'll find a funny story about Paris Hilton's great aunt, Zsa Zsa Gabor. (Apparently being famous simply for being famous runs in the family.)

Years ago, Zsa Zsa had her dog on her lap during a flight, and the flight attendant asked the actress to put her dog back in its cage. Even when told she'd be kicked off the flight, Zsa Zsa refused. (She probably thought they were joking since the flight was already 35,000 feet in the air.) Well, the flight crew wasn't joking, and Zsa Zsa was "left on a runway in Florida, suddenly liable for several thousand dollars worth of expenses for the unscheduled landing."

The remainder of the article discusses why actresses, singers, and other women who travel do so with dogs. I don't know why this takes an entire article when it seems so obvious--dogs provide companionship and comfort! Writing an article about this seems as sensible as writing an article about why cars need brakes.

If you're interested, you can read about Zsa Zsa and opera star Kitt Reuter-Foss ("Yorkie owners are especially wild - we scream, tell stories...") click here.

J-Lo falls for a big dog

Hmmm. Ben has a baby, and Jennifer Lopez gets a dog. I'm sure it's just coincidence that these two news items came out within a day of each other.

And, as always, Jennifer does things her own way. When everyone else in Hollywood goes gaga over teacup dogs, J-Lo gets a huge German Shepherd.

According to FemaleFirst.co.uk, Jennifer and husband Marc Anthony, "looked very squashed in the back (of a car) with the huge dog... But she didn't seem to mind."

Watch for J-Lo to launch a line of pet accessories soon!

For Dick Van Patten, K-9 is Enough

Has it really been almost a quarter of a century since Eight is Enough was on TV?!? Ahem, I mean, it's not as if I'm old enough to remember or anything. Umm, I heard about the show from my parents. Yeah, my parents.

Anyway, Dick Van Patten is lending his name and likeness to a new dog food formula that claims to be indistinguishable from a home-cooked meal for humans. And Dick proved it by eating the "Irish Stew" flavor at a press conference. Yumm!

“Dick Van Patten’s Natural Balance Eatables for Dogs” also comes in such flavors as spaghetti and meatballs, hobo chili and Chinese takeout. (Is it politically correct to reference something as "hobo"?)

And yes, Eight is Enough ran from 1977 to 1981--24 years ago. (Or 168 years in dog years.)

You can read more about Dick and his dog food on CNN.

Paris Hilton, Tinkerbell, and the ridiculously extravagant watch

Just in time for Christmas! Need a gift for the person who has everything? How about a a $100,000, diamond-encrusted watch? Best of all, the watch is called, simply, Paris Hilton! (I went to Target to buy one, but apparently they don't have their shipment quite yet.)

Paris unveiled her limited-edition watch collection at Manhattan's Tourneau Time Machine store on Wednesday. She used the bulk of her press conference not to speak, but to pose with the watch along with Tinkerbell. (Ironically, the AP shot at right seems to omit the expensive wristwatch.)

Paris said, "I worked with the watchmakers and designed the entire watch and the box it came in. It has two of my favorite things: diamonds and travel." The lavish watches bear more than 1,000 diamonds each and show the five time zones. (Yes, when 500 diamonds and three time zones aren't enough, you need Paris.)

Paris plans to expand the line to eventually include pieces at more entry-level price points. "I'm going to have watches in all different price ranges, so all my fans and anyone can afford them," she said.

Not sure what "entry-level" means when your watches included 1,000 diamonds, but no matter--we're glad to see that Tinkerbell is back in the limelight (and who knows where poor Baby Luv is these days?)

Your pet can be a star, just like Mariah Carey's, Kim Basinger's, Matthew Broderick's and Sarah Jessica Parker's

So, your dog is a couch potato and doesn't have the glamour and star quality you desire? Is that the case?

Well then, you need to get Bash Dibra's new book, StarPet, “How to Make Your Pet A Star” by Simon and Schuster. Bash--aside from having a great name--is the trainer of celebrities’ dogs such as Matthew Broderick and Sarah Jessica Parker, Mariah Carey, Jennifer Lopez, Ron Howard, Martin Scorsese, Kim Basinger, Alec Baldwin, Ralph Lauren, Si Newhouse and Henry Kissinger.

His new book StarPet, “How To Make Your Pet A Star” offers advice on how to:
  • “teach your cat or dog to pose for the camera”
  • “train your pet to sit, speak, or raise a paw on cue”
  • “create a professional pet portfolio”
  • “attend local auditions and open casting calls”
  • “practice the same techniques Dibra uses in his StarPet Workshops”
  • “learn about pet health insurance and animal-actors rights” and
  • “receive expert advice about responsible pet ownership”

Personally, we're just happy that our pet welcomes us when we arrive home and doesn't chew on the furniture, but if your sights are set a little higher, then you can find out more information on Bash's book at BashDibra.com.
